Using a Personal Information Locker

Our idea is to offer the same capabilities you pay $$$ for when you buy software but without the limitations. You use our web pages as if they were expensive software products, but you use them with any browser.

Just like the expensive products, you open a document, work on it and then save the result. All the things you expect of other products are present in your PILocker pages. There are menu bars, context menus (right-click / ctrl-click), popup property forms and even the ability to drag items around to reorder your document; all right there in your browser.

But, unlike those products which require multiple licenses to use on different computers and a new license for each new version, you can use the most recent Personal Information Locker services from pretty much anywhere. We like to say "At work, at home, in a cafe or on the road".

PILocker also provides a forum so that members can share information about the service. It is known that the most knowledgeable of users of a system are not usually the builders. Although we the professionals at PILocker actively participate, we definitely do not have all the answers. The forum is the seed of the community of users at PILocker.

Secure and Reliable Communication

All communication with your Personal Information Locker (ws.pilocker.com) is encrypted using secure sockets (SSL). Your browser will automatically use SSL with our servers. This is the same protocol used by all the best, safest and most reliable sites on the web.

Access into your Personal Information Locker is only permitted after you authenticate yourself using your username and password. Since this authentication (login) process uses that same SSL protocol, your username and password are encrypted when transmitted. This prevents snooping by anything between your browser and our servers.

PILocker was designed to minimize network traffic. When you are working on an active document, such as a To Do List, there is no network communication between your browser and the servers. The only time the your browser uses the network is to get a new document from the servers or to save a modified document back onto the servers. This results in fast and reliable work even when connected by a slow wireless service or even a dial-up line.

Data Storage

Your information is stored within the PILocker service as a set of documents. Only the raw information in your document is stored in our servers. We use an eXtended Markup Language (XML) format. This allows us to keep your information in a way that can be reformatted many different ways for display.

Because we don't store the formatting fluff with your document, we can afford to save multiple copies of it. In fact, we currently save every version of a document you save on our servers.

We take great pride in using our decades of professional experience to handle your information with the same level of service expected by anyone in corporate America. Being able to access any version of a document is just a small part of what you should expect of us. This is our "Enterprise Class" promise.

PILocker allows you to organize your information in an outline structure. When you combine this with links, there is little that cannot be recorded. Not only can you organize documents into projects and information in documents into folders and categories, but you can even represent entire organizations.

Community

One of the PILocker enterprise class features is the ability to share your documents with other PILocker subscribers. The PILocker servers manage the access. For any document that you want to share with others, you define who gets to see it and whether that person can save a new version of it. When your friend next fetches a document, they will also see document links to the documents you have allowed them to access.

Putting it all together (Our Architecture)

The real power with PILocker comes with what is done in your browser. We take advantage of the technologies that have been present in your browser for years to allow you to enter and change information using only that browser. This means you don't have to wait for a response from the Internet for every keystroke of mouse button click.

The PILocker servers are what ties this all together. They perform the tasks that allow you to have high expectations with respect to the security availability and reliability of your documents. Among those services are:
  • Authentication
  • Authorization
  • Document Archiving
  • Document Transformation

Authentication

As mentioned earlier, every user that accesses the PILocker server is only permitted to do so after presenting to the service a valid username/password pair.

Authorization

The PILocker servers need to manage document access. They will provide links to all documents you are allowed to see. By default, you will only see links for documents that you own. PILocker does provide the ability to share your information with other community members. Therefore, the servers will also display special links to documents owned by other users if you have access.

The PILocker servers will deny you access to any document you do not have access to even if you figure out a URL that might otherwise get that document.

You control who can see or save your documents. You do so by adding or removing someone from your account's community and then adding them to a document's access list. The document's access list is located in the document's Properties form. The servers rules get modified when you save the document with the modified access list.

Document Archiving

Each time you save modifications made to a document, a save request is passed from the client to the server. The server validates the request and then places the new version of the document into its historical repository. You can also request an earlier version of the document to view. If you just wanted to restart from that point, saving this prior version would effectively undo all the changes made since it.

There is even a way to pull two versions of the same document into your browser. This is useful when you want to recover an item you deleted at a previous version. Just drag it to the current version and save. (Don't save the earlier version as it will overwrite the current one.)

Document Transformation

An advantage of storing your documents in a generic format such as XML is the ability to present it different ways for different devices. Transforming it is handled by server logic. Our servers will show your document differently when you are using a desktop browser as opposed to a wireless PDA.
